THE NEW ASPARAGUS SEASON HAS STARTED
FIRST HARVESTS RECEIVED
The Dutch asparagus season has started again. This week (11) the first asparagus from heated production have become available. ‘We expect the product from traditional cultivation to hit the market from week 16. The season for lovers of the ‘white gold’ runs again until 24 June’ said Johan Wiersma, responsible for asparagus from the Venlo branch. ‘After the extreme season of 2024, we are looking forward to the 2025 season. In any case, the preseason looks promising.’
Local Dutch growers from Limburg and growers from Belgium and Germany ensure that the product is of high quality and always day fresh. Thanks to the contracted acreage, Staay Food Group can deliver homegrown asparagus to customers as early as 24 hours after harvest.
As standard, the asparagus are packed in blue EPS under the Staay house brand RijnStar. In addition, Staay Food Group delivers customised products from Venlo based on customer requirements. Thus, all grades and colours are also available this season. ‘ From week 16, in addition to open-field asparagus, peeled asparagus will also be available, especially for food service relations. With a wide range and flexible packaging options, we can serve customers like our segments.’
‘Out of season, we have white asparagus from the Netherlands available at least until August. After that, we switch to white asparagus from Peru and green asparagus from various countries. In this way, asparagus is part of our wide range all year round.’
Recently our Christoph Jöris talked to Freshplaza about the start of the strawberry season: “Promising asparagus pre-season, but abundant Italian supply challenges start of greenhouse strawberry season”
